Ever since I was a little kid, hummingbirds have always been so elusive. Their mysterious nature makes them almost mythical. I never really saw a hummingbird growing up, even though my mom did everything she could to attract them to the yard.
I never understood how extraordinary these creatures were until I saw them up close in my backyard. Kellie and I have been lucky to have a few visit our hummingbird feeders. Despite their unparalled aerodynamics, what I found most interesting was their eating habits.
Every day hummingbirds must eat more than their own body weight in food to survive. To find food and eat, hummingbirds use what little energey they have left from their last meal. This process of feeding, expending energy, resting, feeding occurs all day. At night, hummingbirds can lower their body temperature and hibernate until the following morning.
I find it absolutely amazing that hummingbirds have such a singular purpose, nectar. Without it for even a few hours they will starve.
I wish that my life could be more like a hummingbird. Not the starving part, but the unyielding dedication. If I could be as dependent on God as a hummingbird is on nectar, I think my life would be close to perfect.
