Tall Fishing Tails?

My dad is full of fish stories. Whenever he goes fishing or hunting, something ALWAYS happens. Anyone who knows my dad, knows that he kindof blows things out of proportion. However, this year's walleye fishing opener was not the case.
We started out at the boat storage facility. My dad had trouble with his boat battery last year. To make sure it was working okay, an employee of the storage facility tested the battery. But not before he dropped the hook-up across the poles of the battery, arc-ed it, and melted one of the terminal posts. Despite this, the battery was working fine...
We got out on the lake (Mille Lacs of course) at about 5 AM. We had poles in the water at 6 AM. At 7:30 AM the depth finder started acting funny. May not seem like a big problem, but you need the depth finder when pulling into the harbor to ensure your prop doesn't hit the bottom. The prop position gauge wasn't working either, in the process of checking it we realized that we could not raise the prop. Meanwhile, the battery gauge went from ~13V to 0V. Before we knew it, we were dead in the water, the boat wouldn't start.
What's funny, all morning my dad said he could smell burning rubber on the shore or on the lake. I had a difficult time smelling it but every once and awhile when I went to the back of the boat I got a whiff of it. I asked him several times, "That smell isn't us" or "That's not on the boat right?" My dad always responded with "No, it's on the lake."
Well, once the battery died and he asked for his toolkit which was under the steering wheel. I reached under to grab it and in the process my hand bumped up against the onboard boat light. It was facing down, completely sealed with the carpet, and was scorching hot. I picked it up. The carpet underneath a golden brown, like a perfectly toasted marshmellow. This whole time, the rubber smell was IN the boat causing all our electrical issues.
Thankfully, my dad was able to wire the trolling motor battery to the boat and got us off the lake.
The rest of the trip went without a hitch, no pun intended :) Either way, I caught the biggest fish (4.5 pounds) and the most fish (7 walleyes, 1 perch, only 5 keepers though). All in all, a successful fishing opener for 2010.
