Kellie and I just returned from our Christmas Present. Sounds silly but instead of exchanging gifts this year we wanted to exchange memories :) We collectively decided to take a trip to the North Shore. North Shore... in Winter? Well, there is quite a spectacle just north of Two Harbors at this time of year and that is Gooseberry Falls.
We stayed at the Comfort Suites in Canal Park. We had a lakeside room to enjoy Lake Superior. We ate at Grandma's Saloon and Grill for dinner. We took some really neat pictures of the lake with all the ice collecting on the shore. Our evening was kept interesting with a local group of pee-wee hockey players. They were on every level of the hotel (unavoidable) and acted like a typical group of pubescent boys. Doors slamming, kids screaming persisted into the late hours of the night. Thankfully, Kellie and I were so exhausted from the day's activities the late-night "thrills" did not bother us too much.
Sun-soaked bedroom curtains, dripping of pink, orange and gold, is a wonderful way to start a morning. Then, watching fog-smothered waters break against an icy shore is nothing short of perfection.
We ate some continental breakfast, grabbed a Cappuccino, and made our way to Gooseberry Falls. We were all bundled up, 4 or 5 layers thick, for an afternoon "stroll." Actually, a better word is "slip." For anyone who has been to Gooseberry Falls you would know there are many stairs, and in Winter you get ice. Mixing these two things can be extremely dangerous. Kellie and I had to hold onto the railings for dear life while navigating the slopes of the Falls.
Probably one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. A frozen water fall, with water still running underneath it. Very, very cool. Strongly recommended to anyone who loves nature and the outdoors.
After Gooseberry Falls, Kellie and I went to Betty's Pies for lunch, Two Harbors to feed some seagulls, and back home. A wonderful, relaxing, necessary adventure. And a great Christmas Present.

Not too long ago I heard the expression, "A waterfall never freezes" as a metaphor for keeping one’s body limber and healthy in the presence of disease. It’s neat to know you guys found water beneath the frozen falls. =)
