The Blue Shallow
A ripple for every moment

The Blue Shallow. Even though everything appears to be shallow and simple, there is so much more depth. The waters of life are more dark blue than anything. Nothing is transparent. There is so much more under the surface...

House

Wave 952

The 12th of December, 2009 at 01:56 PM

As stated earlier, I'm looking at houses. Just a year and half ago, I could barely imagine living in an apartment by myself. Now a house is perculating my neurons, what in the world am I thinking!

Everyone has there wants and needs, however I think everyone has a hard time separating the two. I know alot of things I want in my new house, but I don't know what things people consider a need. Do you need a modern kitchen? Or a 2 level house? Do you really need 2000 square feet? How much is 2000 square feet anyways? Do you need at least 2 full bathrooms, what the heck is 3/4 bath?

The more I think about it, the more I think what I really need is a house that provides shelter, warmth, and memories. Everything else is considered a want, desire, or a glorious fabrication of ideas.

Now what do I really want. Well, after a couple of "sessions" with my realtors I've come up with the following wants so far (in empirical order of course!):

  • A price range of 175-225k.
  • A house that is approximately a 20 minute drive to work, of course it could be less.
  • A large enough basement for a home theater. I'll discuss more specifics about this in future posts.
  • A 2 level house with at least 3 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, and preferentially a bathroom in the basement.
  • A modern kitchen

It's a "working list" subject to change. I am planning to go to an open house this weekend to hopefully get a better idea what I am looking for. If any blueshallow friends have advice, feel free to comment or email me. House hunting is fun, exciting, nerve-racking, and frightening all at the same time. Moral support is greatly appreciated :)

It’s almost always a nightmare, but a very fun one: kitchen remodeling.  You are young and healthy, so remember the sweat equity you could put in your house doing big improvements on your own!  Woo!

What about a 1/4 bath?  Just a toilet in a closet somewhere.  HAHAHA.  Ok, back to hypoparathyroidism.

Maybe you can use hypoparathyroidism as an excuse for being unable to finish your finals??? Tell them the tetany is intermittent but severe!

Just a shout-out to Justin, now the binary is "readable." :)

A fence sounds nice.

Any leads in the house search?

Kellie and I visited an open house on Sunday (despite some miscommunication between the Realtor and I. It was more of a "feeling out" session. Getting an appreciation of size and other subconscious desires I have.

Thus, the following characteristics were added to the list:
-Central Air, Forced Heat (NO BASEBOARD HEATERS)
-Preferably, 1000 square ft or larger footprint w/ full basement.

I’m sure more soon to come. Oh yeah, and that fence... ;)

OH!  I remembered something.  Be sure to ask about what the wallboard is constructed from in the bathrooms.  I think cement backer board only became code in the last 10-20 years — the issue is, the walls (even green board) start to rot in the bathrooms.  So... they look great and pass house inspection, but are trouble in the future.  Plus, it’s a good way to see how much your real estate agent knows about construction.  Though I guess they’ll probably tell you there’s no way to determine what the wallboard is constructed from.  Oh well.

My realtor is a dork. When discussing counter top space, he went off on a tangent about silestone and the benefits of having silestone vs granite. After his little soliloquy he ended with, "That’s Silestone for ya, don’t take it for granite."

He sounds like a silly house dealer.  Hopefully one that can get you a good house, though.
