I'm reading a book, Screwtape Letters, by C. S. Lewis. Ironically, I've been distracted by so many things the past couple months I haven't had time to finish it. The book is a peculiar dialog which is deeply rooted in temptation and sin. I'll explain briefly.
This book is a collection of letters from a demon named Screwtape to his nephew (another demon) Wormwood. It sounds silly, but the exchanges are very intriguing and thought-provoking. The premise of the book follows:
- Each person is assigned a demon, it is the demon's job to divert the person from God to the Devil.
- An experienced demon (Screwtape) coaches a rookie (Wormwood) about tempting "his" human.
I won't say much more, seeing that I haven't even finished the book. However, I will say this... C.S. Lewis's interpretation/understanding of these temptations is baffling. You think these demons would talk about violence, war, swearing, cursing, lying, and lust. Instead, C.S. Lewis focuses on things such as daily prayer, attending church, ignorance, apathy, self-righteousness, and complacency. The more you read, the more you realize these temptations are not only real but a part of your actions everyday.
It's mind boggling, depressing, enlightening, and humbling all at the same time. This is a great book from a great author, I strongly recommend it.

Calvin’s teacher Ms. Wormwood was named after that character.
