Aromas Of The Past

The other day was a pleasant reminder of the aromas of my past. As weird and quirky as that sounds, it did bring back many memories both good and bad. Funny how something so reminiscent can be so sensational. No verbal irony intended, pysch.
So I was driving out of my apartment complex one early morning, windows down as usual to let in the late Spring air. I was caught behind the occasional Metro Transit bus, which was picking up some smart people. A gust of wind hit my nostrils, the first day of school. Memories of the yellow bus, the backpack, the kids at the bus stop, the nervousness and excitement all came back as if it were only yesterday. Then I hit the freeway and all the familiar scents trickled back out from whence they came.
I parked in my parent's driveway and prepared for a run. Running in the morning is nice. You aren't bogged down by life yet but you're still not quite awake, leading to sometimes the most perfect running experience. I began briskly down the street into to the sunrise. Across the intersection, down the hill and past an Evergreen. The sharp stingy pines perculated my senses, which only brought me back to my grandma's house in St. Paul. My grandma has been gone now for almost 5 years, but I will never forget her. The smell of her backyard trees left an everlasting impression on all the Easter egg hunts, games of football, wiffle ball, and just good ol' yard work. And with that came grandma and all the good times we had. I still miss her. The rest of my time spent running evaporated, as my mind lingered elsewhere and my feet carried me home.
I find it strange how the mind can take something so specific and associate it with so many different memories. But I find it amazing that God gives us all these little moments to help remind us how far we've come and who we are.
