Cold
A ripple for every moment

Frigid sky scattered here and there. Shadows watch mountains who are not easily scared. Snowflakes fall as time stands still, while sun's warmth trembles under the treacherous chill. Depths run thin as the ice grows, and blue meets white in the blue shallow. Everything covered perfectly in a blanket, one that is cold and doesn't need to fake it.

On Sacrifice

Wave 837

Sunday

The 24th of September, 2006 at 12:14 PM

I've been meaning to write about this for awhile now. Sacrifice is a word that applies to many things: baseball, relationships, life. How can a word apply to something as trivial as a sport and something as significant as life. And I'm going to try to tackle this, without discrediting the gravity of the word.

Baseball. There are two strategies in baseball which require taking an out to advance a runner. These two strategies are aptly named sacrifice fly and sacrifice bunt. Both of these tactics utilize a batter, making contact with the ball, sacrificing his chance for hit for the chance of a run. In each case, sacrificing something potentially extraordinary for a sure thing. There is no such thing as a sure thing, but giving up something that is desirable for something more desirable is human nature.

Relationships. If you have never had a converation about sacrifice, I would be surprised. And if I were to be surprised, I know that at some point in your life you have made a sacrifice with somebody. This could be spending less time with family and friends, giving up your personal time, or even overlooking something you love. Sacrifices are made for a reason. They are made in attempt to get closer to the ones you care about. Sacrifices can be misinterpreted and poorly understood, but should be respected. A person makes a sacrifice because they hope for something greater, something beautiful. Something they couldn't get without giving up something in their life.

Life, probably the most profound example of sacrifice. A few weeks ago in a reproduction lecture I learned something about horses. When a mare is pregnant with twins, her birth canal is not big enough for the two of them. Veterinarians, after detecting the presence of twins in the mare, are required to take a life, to save a life. Where else would a sacrifice be more powerful? In the bible. A man given by our Father to die, for us. To give us hope, to give us life.

What sacrifice boils down to my friends, is giving up something great.... for something greater. Moving your life in a direction towards destiny. Do not be afraid of sacrifice, be afraid of life without it.
